Connecting to a Virtually Free Hotspot

Windows XP

  1. Make sure your wireless card is inserted or your built-in wireless is activated - you should see a notification balloon appear along the bottom of your screen
  2. Click on the above message to see a list of available networks
  3. Click on "Virtually Free" to select it and then click on the Connect button - a message may appear warning you that you are about to connect to an unsecured network
  4. Click on "Connect Anyway" – with the Virtually Free network no other user will be able to see or access your computer
  5. After a few seconds your Wireless Network Connection window will show you as being connected to the Virtually Free network.
  6. When you see this start your favourite browser and you will be presented with our login screen. Enter the access code you’ve been given and any other information requested, click the "Login" button.
  7. That's it! Start browsing and emailing! The next time you use a "Virtually Free" hotspot your laptop should automatically recognise the network and you'll be able to start browsing straight away


  1. Click on the wireless network icon in the top right hand side of the main menu bar.
  2. Check that the airport is on by clicking on the "Turn Airport On" menu item if available.
  3. Select the "Virtually Free" menu item from the list of available networks.
  4. Click "Yes" to connect automatically to this network in the future.
  5. You are now connected to the Virtually Free network. Start your favourite browser and wait for the logon page to appear. Enter your access code and away you go – happy surfing!
